how tiny rewards will get your list accomplished

I get a kick out of smiley faces. My love of them is actually strong enough to get me to do tiny chores I otherwise dislike. Do you remember the scene in Forrest Gump when he wipes he face on the T-shirt and it’s a smiley face? I giggled.

I realized how motivational a smiley face could be the first time I applied that : and ) on my daily list. A little electrical charge went through my body and I smiled. Satisfaction.

I work alone. I am a mother. I volunteer a great deal. These are 3 areas of my life where love pours out and … not a lot comes back at me (except that lovely satisfaction of knowing I’m doing good in the world 🙂 ).

The daily grind of my life, probably yours as well, leaves me feeling pretty invisible much of the time. So, when I see “schedule Logan’s doctor appointment” on the calendar for today and I get it done, it brings me a thrill to apply : and ) and then magically press that space bar :).

Because there is no one around to smile at me when I’ve done the chores I don’t care for, something inside my skin has gotten fooled into thinking no one cares when I do what I do. My smiley faces have fixed that.

Believe it or not, this simple tool inspires me to do tiny chores. It’s nice to be smiled at.

  • Schedule doctor appointment 🙂
  • Send email to HLM 🙂
  • Do 1 load of laundry 🙂

What tiny rewards give you a thrill? When do you feel invisible? How do I get access to more emoticons in life, and do you have a particular favorite?

I am taking time to address my mess. It’s part of my 4-step philosophy in Soulful Cleansing. Identify – Notice – Address – Tend.  I’d love to have you join the class.

I am participating in 31-days of Soulful Cleansing. This project is the collaborative brainchild of The Nester. Join her here and see all the other 31-day projects.

Well, here’s a smile for you from me! 🙂

I think that sometimes we don’t realize how much a small gesture, like a smile for someone, can brighten their day.

We don’t realize these pleasures we bring to other people, because it’s rare that someone will stop to say: “Thank you for that smile. It made my day!” or “Thank you for that insightful blog post. It changed the way I think and made a difference.” We read the blog post or enjoy the happiness we feel from the good turns of others, and hopefully pass them on, so that the world is a better place, but often fail to recognize the benefactor who bestowed that happy feeling in us.

So, today, my generous friend, I want to say thank YOU for your smiling face, both real and in cyberspace! Know that your smiley faces are being passed on. 🙂
