Every foul mood and every headache I’ve ever had has been lessened when I go outside. That is twice as true in the autumn. Blue sky, crisp air and golden colors combine to soften what is hard inside my skin.

Clutter is always a sign of neglect in one form or another. In its simplest form clutter on my kitchen island represents my neglect to offer time to a horizontal surface that collects details. When I spend even 10 minutes a day truly attending I can keep it clear.

It’s amazing to me how difficult it is for me to offer myself that 10 minutes.

So neglect builds up its layer of tension inside my skin and these little micro knots tie double bows at the back of my neck.

I go outside and, because the air is so fresh, I automatically breathe deeper. I hear the leaves crunch under my feet and I’m seduced to grab a rake and linger. Industry is my invitation to stay.

I reach and pull. A carpet of leaves comes toward me and I see the sea of grass below. Sweat begins to bead up under my sweatshirt and I peel away the outer layer. Taking up the rake again I continue scratching Mother Earth’s back.

My breath comes hard and heavy and the bowties in my neck loosen their grip. When a glass of water invites me inside to quench my thirst, I take two fast gulps and pause. The cereal box and breakfast dishes get cleared away while the chill of the water passes and my mouth is ready for more.

Another swallow. The water tastes so good, replacing all that invited my sweatshirt to come off. There are three post-it notes on the counter, one requiring a phone call, so I dial, chat and swallow more delicious water. The other note gets transferred to my computer. The third I throw away, after noticing the happy thought it inspired.

Refilling my glass, I gulp again and walk up and down the hallway, returning a hairband, a pocketknife, and sunscreen. Things collect in the kitchen and get returned to their variety of homes in drawers and cupboards elsewhere.

The sponge finishes the job: 11 minutes, due to my chatty nature on the phone.

Back outside, rake in hand, more neck-knots to untie. My dog rolls happy on her back and shakes her leash with the enthusiasm that a good romp inspires. Autumn is not a time to miss.

Hi Rebecca,
I agree with you. Fresh air can cut through the clutter in our minds and hearts! This is a lovely reminder to step outside and breathe in the delicious fresh air. Here in Miami the colors don’t change much in the Fall. I miss those glorious leaves turning colors. Autumn blessings, Marjory
